As other reviewers have said, don’t hesitate to book your Morocco tour with Tilila!

I took a 9-day customized, private tour as a solo, middle aged female traveler going to Morocco for the first time. I have to admit I was a bit nervous going to a country where women may be treated differently than they are in the U.S., where I don’t speak any of the official languages, spending more than a week with a stranger driving me around, and about the legitimacy of the arrangement to pay a deposit by wire and then show up at the airport and hand the driver an envelope full of cash for the remainder.

But all of my fears were for nothing. I had the most incredible trip and I am so glad I chose Tilila Travel. There were no surprises about the accommodations, itinerary, or payment. Everything went as planned.

Mohamed, the owner/manager of Tilila was patient with my many questions as I was debating what I wanted to include in my itinerary and the dates of travel. He answered my questions clearly and fully and was available by email or What’s App from pre-booking throughout the trip.

My driver, Khalid, made me feel safe and at ease from the moment he picked me up at the airport. He speaks English well enough that there were never any communication problems, whether it was talking about the itinerary, local cultures, the landscape, or just sharing life stories. He shared his knowledge freely and was honest if he didn’t know the answer to my question, which was rare. He gave me tips for enjoying each location, taught me a few phrases in Arabic and Amazirgh (Berber), and pointed out interesting land formations or landmarks along the drive. He really went above and beyond when I slipped on wet tile and fell on my tailbone at a bathroom stop in Errachidia. Although I didn’t think the injury was serious Khalid insisted on doing whatever made me most comfortable and we ended up getting the X-rays to be sure there was no serious problem. Khalid and the manager of the gas station/restaurant where we stopped to use the restroom accompanied me to the local hospital, helped me with paperwork and translations, and stayed with me while I waited for X-rays. It set that day’s itinerary back a few hours. It was already a long drive that day and Khalid never seemed rushed or frustrated about the wrench in the day. In fact after the hospital we stayed to eat lunch at the restaurant where I fell and it was the best food I had in all of Morocco (which is a land of excellent food). If you are traveling between Merzouga and Fes ask to stop for lunch at Lune de Desert in Errachidia! We had the kefta and chicken tagine and both were phenomenal. Throughout the tour Khalid kept me safe and I enjoyed getting to know him.

I chose the 3-star accommodation option over the 4-star option and glad I did as to me it seems like the 3-star options have a bit more character. Mohamed provided examples of each before I booked and there were no surprises between the examples and where I actually stayed. My favorite was Riad Dar Nadwa in Marrakesh. I enjoyed how nicely appointed everything was and the host was very welcoming. The room was incredibly spacious and beautiful. Mohamed also stopped by the Riad to meet me in person there one day, which was a nice gesture and I enjoyed getting to know him a bit more. My least favorite was Hotel Ziryab in Chefchaouen. The bed wasn’t as comfortable as the other accommodations and the property generally seemed a bit more run down than the others. However, all accommodations were clean and in excellent locations with hot showers. Most had very comfy beds, a/c, and spacious and quiet rooms. A few had pools though I didn’t use any of them. One had dinner included and the food there was very good.

Local guides in Marrakesh and Fes were also good and I felt safe with them in the busy souks. I’m not a big shopper and the guides didn’t pressure me to shop.

Overall it was an amazing trip and I highly recommend Tilila Travel!

Tilila Travel > Fast forward service, excellent communication and Mohamed was adapting the tour to our needs and extension of nights beforehand. All was planned for us and organised precisely. Hotels were selected nicely. Our driver Hassan took very good care of us and everything during our trip. He stopped everywhere for pictures, shared insights about country, history and people. He was very helpful, service oriented and attentive. Whenever possible he seized opportunities that we could stretch our legs and walk a few minutes (as we like walking) and meet him somewhere along the way. We shared a good time during these days and would travel anytime with him again. It is sure to say that we spend some hours in the car (nearly 1700km in 10 days), however, a diverse landscape, good music and conversations made it very pleasing. Plus for us it was perfect to unwind as we did not have any stress to plan, other options where to go and we happily cruised along with Hassan. Perfect. This was a great experience and comes highly recommended. Oh, we liked it so much, especially as we moved with ease compared to the small size or larger tourist groups. Morocco > Morocco was a very positive surprise for us. We started without any expectations and harboured some doubts as we both are seasoned travellers. We are active and travel usually individually without any guide or tour but Morocco excelled most of the time. The Moroccans provide easily a smile for you if you are attentive and respectful in our approach. A country full of diverse landscape, friendly and welcoming people. No complications with anyone, if you do not act out. Food is very tasty and a cup of tea is the start of every relationship. Marrakesh > The red city and as well the touristic capital. All in inside the Medina is in walking distance. Get lost in the souk and be surprised at any corner. Enjoy a fresh juice on the main square (it’s safe to have it) and observe the spectacle. Snake charmers, artists, music groups etc. All will battle for your attention. You will not be disappointed. They aren’t too pushy at all. Things slow down after 8pm and you should make your way home by 9pm if possible. A good tracking app would be helpful to find your way in the maize of the Medina. It’s fun! We exchange money at the main square which easy and straightforward. We spend an extra day at the end of the tour and this was great. It eased everything and provides a relaxing departure schedule to home. Our Riad (Hotel) was nicely located with super friendly service all the time. You can have a friendly chat or ask for a cup of late night tea any time. All is decent and clean. We loved it. Chefchaouen > Yes it is blue! You can visit all streets in the city and you find one corner more wonderful than the other. During noon/afternoon when the light makes the colours pop even more it is very appealing for the eyes. Here as well, it is all easy to reach by foot. You should walk up to the lookout point. It’s worth the little walk. All in all, it’s a smaller city and one day is more than enough to cover the essence of the it. Our Riad was spectacular and perfectly nicely located. Super friendly service all the time. Breakfast was the best but we ate in the city for dinner. Fez > Craftsmanship at any corner. Our guide Tommy was legendary. Throughout his experience (over 50years), the tour was funny, informative and easy to follow. You will experience the city mostly by foot and find yourself in the passages away from the crowds and in between the locals. It was one of the highlights of the tour and the extra day was well spend. Just go with the flow. The local vendor and artisan would like to sell their products. Just take your time and compare with other shops. Bargaining is good but don’t over do it. There are good and authentic products available. Just go for it. Sahara > the camel ride during the sunset towards the camp was scenic and dramatic at the same time. Perfect for taking pictures. Recommendation by night… walk a few meters away from the camp, sit in the dunes and enjoy the night sky – under good weather conditions you’ll see so many stars! Amazing. Next morning you can go back through the dunes by camel or car. We took the camel and enjoyed the tranquility of the morning and sunrise. The camp was nice and comfortable for one night. All good and clean and no problems. You should take a power bank along for charging and switch off WiFi etc. It’s the dessert. There will be other groups in the camp. Just take it easy and go with the flow. Casablanca > the mosque is worth a visit, the city was not our cup of tea. We preferred all other places over this city. So do not “waste” too much time here. The Atlas Mountains, Rabat, Ait Ben Haddou, the different valleys,… all of them are nice places to visit (or drive through) on the go. In a nutshell: Go! Fly in and enjoy the ride! Just talk to Mohamed or Hassan and they will make it happen.
